No physical, mental, social impairments (physiological/psychological) drug dependence. Change in brain function due to repeated presence of the drug. Requires more of the drug to let brain function the way it should. Absence of drug produces some negative consequence in terms of how the brain works. Brain incapable of any normal function when drug is no longer. Want to feel same as the first time they took the drug, so person begins to administer more desired effect requires more of the drug over time.
