In 1988, usoc created the career assistance program for athletes . Retirement as a transition theory: retirement is seen as a transition that happens over time rather than a singular event. Focus should be on gradual chances as opposed to ending pursuits and goals. More control over retirement leads to less distress. Age, de-selection and injury are all uncontrollable which can lead to anxiety, depression and substance abuse. Research on olympic athletes shows they suffered decrease in sense of personal control if retirement was not their choice: social identity: diverse social identities can help with transition. Since many athletes are defined by their popularity and status, they question their self-worth.
