Document Summary
Memory- the ability to acquire, retain, and retrieve information. Encoding- taking information and readying it for storage into memory. Storage- retaining of information for later use. Retrieval- the act of recovering stored information. Most memory errors are due to a lack of attention. Only through attention does sensory info become available to short-term memory. Short retainment (20 seconds - 2 minutes) Central executive manages whether your attention is on visuospatial or phonological at a given time. Episodic buffer- integrates information, brings in other sensory information. Primacy effect- likely to recall information presented first. Recency effect- likely to recall information presented ast. Information is stored semantically (focuses on relationships and associations) Semantic memory- processes ideas and concepts without personal experience. Episodic memory- associated with events due to autobiographical events. Implicit (procedural) memory- doesn"t require conscious thought, allows action by rote or memory.
