MUSI 2540 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: City Year, Dyke March, Collective Action
The Music of Pride
About Pride
● It all started at Stonewall Inn on June 27, 1969
○ Pride events mark a 6-day protest against police raids on gay-friendly
establishments.
● First Pride events held in NYC, LA, and Chicago on June 28, 1970.
● Pride challenges heteronormativity: the imposition of a strict gender binary on individuals
by society.
○ Heteronormativity regulates romantic relationships and gender identity.
● Through Pride celebrations, presence becomes protest.
○ “Festive affairs do the serious work of protest by challenging cultural meanings
as marchers and spectators publicly revel in the joy of being themselves” - Bruce
(2016)
○ Pride events seek broad cultural change
