Document Summary

So you want to major in the arts. What do we see: getting a college degree more than doubles (on average) the annual earnings of those who stopped with a high school diploma. The next question we address is how the choice of college major can have a dramatic (no pun intended) effect on lifetime outcomes. We will focus on college graduates who had arts majors. First we"ll look at earnings per college major, then unemployment, and last we"ll look at the types of jobs that arts majors work in. All this is from the 2009-11 american community survey public use microdata. Earnings in any major category are the average earnings of all persons with that major who are currently in the labor force. Majors in black we call narrow arts majors. the four in blue, when added, make. 10 of the 13 arts majors have unemp rates that lie above that of the college graduate average.
