Z-axis = visual depth in set/scene
Risers = 8-10 inch platforms meant to boost the set into the air so that a typical camera angle
will remain eye level to the anchors. News desk will be placed on top of them.
The background of a news set is often made up of walls of panels called flats. Or behind it is
the studio curtain/cyc.
A duratran - a back-lit translucent photograph of a cityscape, landmark, or other bit of local
geography is sometimes embedded in the wall of flats.
Virtual sets is a computer-generated background (the chroma key effect is used to layer the
camera images over the background graphic).
The Set Design Process
1. Input meeting w/ client
a. Find out station’s goals, production needs, budget, and timeline.
2. Develop floor plan to establish camera shots and traffic flow
a. Design floor plan to ascertain good geometry for camera placement relative to
backgrounds.
3. Presentation of CAD shots and color renderings
a. Demonstrates how the set will look - the color scheme and materials.
4. Design approval and acceptance of the contract
a. Usually occurs after some design tweaks are made following client feedback.
5. Construction, installation, and lighting of set
a. Sets are generally constructed in modular pieces in one of our shops the set is
then shipped and our install team goes to the station’s studio for final assembly.
6. On-Air Premiere as per client schedule
a. Our lighting director and project manager conduct rehearsals with the client prior
to the Air Date.
Lighting
Studio lighting requires 2-4 times the amount of electricity that is required for a regular home.
Each light that is used in a studio will be serviced w/ a breaker-protected individual 20-amp
circuit (and is nearly always 120 volts). So 400 amps of “active” service permits the
illumination of 20 lights at any given time. 600 amps = 30 lights, so on. # amps = ½ minus a
zero lights.
A 2000-watt lamp (a 2K) requires an individual 20-amp circuit. So consider that 400 amps of
“active” service permits the simultaneous illumination of 20 20-amp circuits, each using 2000-
watt lamps for a total illumination of 40,000 watts of lighting power.
