Four components of language: phonology the study of sounds that compose languages. There are language rules which dictate which sounds can be placed together in a word: syntax rules of word order. Anastrophe transposition of normal word order. Parallelism: semantics study of the meaning of words. The sentence makes sense in terms of syntax, but makes no sense in terms of meaning. Multiple factors contribute to the creation of meaning. Connotative meaning: pragmatics how language is used in specific situations to accomplish goals. Directives speakers ty to get their listeners to do something. Commissives speakers commit themselves to a future course of action.
