Document Summary

Grafting: joining parts of two plants that grow together and become a new plant. Scion: piece of dormant shoot which forms upper part of graft. Controls disease resistance (esp soil borne pathogens) Found in only dicots and responsible for girth and diameter growth. Also in cuttings: sometimes precedes formation of adventitious roots. Conferring characteristic of the rootstock into the high quality fruit. On the scion: take a sloping cut at the base and do another cut. This will connect the vascular cambium of the root stock and of the scion. In all types of grafting, the 2 parts must match up be held securely together. Ideally this would occur in late dormancy, or a month before bud break. Prune off rootstock buds, otherwise it can potentially overtake scion wood. Instead of scion being a branch, it"s a small piece of wood with a single bud. Used for fruit trees and woody ornamentals.
