French coined this shot as plan americain because they noticed that it was the predominant shot used in hollywood films. Slide 15= it is a medium close up even though smiley is in the background because the mayor talking to the little kid is the most important element in the film. Straight-on angle: where the camera is at eye/chest level of the main character gives what looks like a normal angle as if the viewer were standing there right near the actor. High angle: camera is up high looking down upon actors. Low angle: camera is placed low shooting up toward the figures. Canted framing/ canted angle: frame is crooked helps to provide a sense of disorientation/destabilization. Pan: camera is rotated horizontally camera stays in place but the lens moves back and forth pan left and pan right. Tilt: camera apparatus stays in place, but the camera lens moves vertically tilt up and tilt down.
