Stories we tell is a narrative documentary, as the story of director sarah polley"s paternity unfolds across the non- fiction film in a causal chain. The film recreates past moments and doesn"t always clearly signal what is a real event captured on film and what is a reenactment. Polly is breaking down this continuum and saying that both of these (reenactments and real) have equal truth puts equal weight to real and false and accomplishes this by putting them in close proximity. Did this to allow us to question the story and let us realize that this is a story and these are different perspectives try to guess which is the truth and which details matter most.
