Franny and lane: both are very human, both are very flawed, both are very critical, they are easy to dislike because they are mirrors to humanity. Lane: he tried to empty his face of all expression that might quite simply, perhaps even beautifully, reveal how he felt about the arriving person (salinger 7) He doesn"t know how to be vulnerable, doesn"t know that it"s good to be vulnerable. His body betrays his fear of vulnerability. Franny: the words were no sooner out of her mouth that she realized she didn"t mean them at all. She is always guilty, always saying things she doesn"t mean toward him. Neither franny nor lane are capable of being genuine: franny gives lane simulated affection . Franny"s critique on society: we could say she"s experiencing depression, anxiety, or a nervous breakdown, but franny is much more complex than that, she"s undergoing a sort of identity crisis, she quits the theatre:
