Document Summary

Cell cycle, from formation of new cell through the next cell division. Single origin of replication , site at which replication begins. Terminus : site at which replication is terminated (located opposite the origin) Replisome : group of proteins needed for dna synthesis. Dna replication proceeds in both directions from the origin. Origins move to opposite ends of the cell. Mother cell gives rise to a daughter cell; dna replicated and is followed by cytokinesis. Mainly occurs in fungi, also in some bacteria. Fungi - filaments ( hyphae ) that grow only at their tips ( apical growth ). Environmental factors affecting growth: solutes and water activity, ph, temperature, oxygen, pressure . Microbes are at the mercy of the environment--cannot regulate their own temperature. Most organisms grow in fairly moderate environmental conditions. Extremophiles grow under conditions that would kill most organisms. Changes is osmotic concentrations in the environment may affect microbial cells.
