Concept of self: 1) imagination of our appearance 2) people"s view of our appearance: affects our perspective and feelings of our appearance. Idea of self very much comes from society. Group precedes the self, cannot have a self without the group (chicken and egg cycle) Made sociologists aware that ability to think is intimately related to selfhood and symbol use. Self-consciousness emerges as we come to respond to our own gestures at the same time as those around us. Importance of play that will allow us to take the role of others and thus, anticipate how to react. "i" - subject, active - responds to demands. "me" - object, made up of attitudes we internalize from our interactions with others- internalized other which makes demands on us (by virtue of our anticipants) Not the social context but our language that influences our view of the world, language can be a reflection of our personality.
