ANP 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Folsom Point, Bison Antiquus, Laetoli
Document Summary
So we try to excavate smallest amount possible to answer our research questions. Lots lost because of old arch excavations. Dig according to natural layers(strata), following division in sediments indicated by diffs in color, texture, contents. Principle of (stratigraphic) association - artifacts in the same stratum are the same age. Principle of (stratigraphic) superposition - deeper, underlying levels are older than those that overlie them. Sediments footprint is in and fill it in can be dated and estimated time can be determined. Often artifacts and features are not directly dated(or date-able) So archists often date the sediments surrounding, underlying, or overlying cltral materials we are interested in found positions of all other locations of artifacts/features are recorded relative to the site datum. In situ - (latin) in position refers to the original place where an artifact/feature was. Datum point - place on the site defined by the archists who position is known.
