What situational factors influence attraction: proximity: we tend to be attracted to those who are geographically close to us (live near us, work near us, etc) Randomly assigned student to roommates in college dorms. 6 months later: measured closest friends: 2/3 of participants had best friends on the same floor. Works in classrooms, workplace, college dorms, etc: familiarity: we tend to like those who are familiar to us. Remember the mere exposure effect: similarity: we tend to be attracted to those who are similar to us. Similarity in physical attractiveness (?: reciprocal liking: we like those who like us. Conditions: two participants in the experiment, manipulated perceptions of partners liking, your partner likes you vs. your partner not liking you. Tested to see: if you like your partner or not. Results: finding: beliefs about partner"s liking affects your attitudes and behavior, anxiety: anxiety breeds affiliation.
