End of world war i and the treaty of versailles. Instead of marching along the english channel, the germans marched on paris from the. North but they didn"t know the french had an army in paris. The french hit the german flank hard which stopped their advance. This resulted in both sides digging trenches across from each other. Prior to all of this, the french implemented plan 17 and suffered heavy casualties. Trench warfare began in the fall of 1914. There were many attempts to end the deadlock of trench warfare but none actually worked. Gas warfare has a minimal effect because most troops were issued with gas masks. The british attempt to invade the ottoman empire failed and resulted in heavy casualties. The russians were very easily defeated in battle because their soldiers were poorly equipped and led. Germany decided in 1916 that they had to end the war quick because they couldn"t fight a war of attrition.
