The cold war was a result of world war ii and the way it pitted the two remaining superpowers against each other. The usa wanted to transform the international arena after world war i. +the transformation was to be based on woodrow wilson"s 14 points. +fdr and churchill met in canada and made the atlantic charter. Atlantic charter = called for democracy everywhere that was under axis control, national self-determination and more commerce. Cornerstone of the united nations which was made for collective security. Fdr created the atlantic charter during world war ii because he had to push it through. +to get it through he made the atlantic charter seem critical to the war effort. The ussr was concerned by this because they weren"t sure that a democratic country would work with them or become a threat. Soviets set up undemocratic governments in occupied eastern europe because they wanted puppet governments whom they could manipulate for security reasons.
