GLG 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Metallic Bonding, Ionic Bonding, Nonlinear Gameplay
Document Summary
Luster is the term used to describe mineral surfaces reflect light. Crystal faces are smooth, flat surfaces with regular geometric outlines. Density is a measure of the mass of a material divided by its volume. Cleavage refers to the flat, smooth plains along which some minerals break and also to the shape of the resulting fragments. A breakage that does not form smooth planes is a fracture. Streak is the color of the residue produced by scratching a mineral on a non- glazed porcelain plate. Elements are substances that cannot be broken down chemically into simpler substances. A bond is the arrangement of electrons around the nuclei of an atom. And ionic bond is the result of an attraction between negative and positive ions and this occurs when electrons are transferred from one atom to another. A covalent bond is a bond a carbon atoms. A metallic bond is where electrons freely roam among several atoms.
