INFS 247 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Online Analytical Processing, Regression Analysis, Online Transaction Processing
INFS Lecture 7
Business Intelligence and Data Mining
Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) – updating, retrieving and presenting data from databases
for operational purposes
Online analytical processing (OLAP) – Querying and presenting data from data warehouses
and/or data marts for analytical purposes
OLAP / BI Tools
oAnalysis of data in datawarehouses / marts
oAlso known as BI tools
oRetrieve data from data warehouses and marts by point and click actions by users
Basic OLAP/BI tool features
oSlice and dice
Adds, replaces, or eliminates specified attributes from the already displayed
result
oPivot (Rotate)
Reorganizes the values displayed in the original query result by moving values of
a dimension column from one axis to another
oDrill down
Makes the granularity of the data in the query result finer
oDrill up
Makes the granularity of the data in the query result coarser
Many OLAP/BI tools are web-based
Data visualization – Graphically visualizing the answers
Additional functionalities of OLAP/BI Tools Functionalities
oCreating and examining calculated data
oDetermining comparative or relative differences
oPerforming exception analysis, trend analysis, forecasting, and regression analysis
oNumber of other analytical functions
Accessing data in data warehouses and data marts
oOLAP/ BI tools
