Rhetorical- interested in public address and public speaking and their functions in society. Semiotics- study of signs (communicates a message) Cybernetic- looks at noise in the communication process and the complexity of message meaning because of unpredictable feedback. Socio-psychological- concerned with cause & effect models (human communication behavior is influenced by something else- a variable) Socio-cultural- everyday interactions with others depend heavily on pre-existing shared cultural patterns and social structures. Critical- concerns itself with injustice, oppression, power and linguistic dominance. It critiques social order and the assumption of power that social structure and individuals hold. Social contexts: the environment in which communication occurs. Small group- communication among at least three other individuals (peers are influenced by small groups) Organizational- communication within and among large, extended environments.
