Document Summary
Purpose: answer big questions about society, democracy, across different countries. Reason: we can understand processes better when compared to other times and places. Historical events research- study events from one previous time period. Historical process research- study historical processes over long time period or several time periods. Cross-sectional comparative research- compare two or more nations during one time period. Comparative historical research- compare two or more nations over several time periods. One time period across different countries / regions. ex: comparing life expectancy across the world. Often variable-based instead of case-based like historical research. Mean literacy rates, birth rates, perceptions of immigrants, voter participation, etc. Ex weber protestant ethic (compared us and european countires) Tend to be qualitative and case based. Case oriented = focus on one nation or region or unit as a whole rather than individuals in isolation. Historically specific= linked to specific times and places, not necessarily generalizable.
