Document Summary
To do probability, need a list of the population. When/n you have a probability sample you can: make inference to a larger population. in other words, know the likelihood that your results are what you would expect to find in the target population: nonprobability samples. You sometimes cant get a random sample. ex: homeless, victims of sexual assault, evacuation shelter. Your goal may not be statistical, but seeking particular detailed information about specific group. Types: availability (also called convenience) selecting based on who you find easily or first. Ex: stand outside stubbs and ask students who walk by to do a survey on sexual assault: quota similar to stratified in probability, but not random. Try to ensure representative of population on particular traits. ex: outside stubbs , ask 50 men 50 women to do survey: purposive. Each element (individual) selected for a purpose /reason. may be particularly knowledgeable or interested in topic.
