The need for more was clear, but how to do it was the problem. Whittaker came to a system that involved grouping levels. He tried to look for features in organisms that were easy to see. He used the attributes to define the five groups. Had to use lots of characteristics to distinguish the kingdoms. Must be different from everything else. (list of them on teachers online notes). Is this a single cell organism or multicellular organism. Was a way for him to distinguish the plants from fungi from the animals. Animals bring chemicals into body and break them down from within. Fungi break them down outside of their bodies and then absorb it into their bodies. Wanted to make a pattern of the groups that were related. The idea is to make an evolutionary history with the oldest being at the top of the diagonal lines. And at the bottom is the current time.
