Consciousness: sleeping and dreaming, hypnosis, alcohol and drugs. Example: suppose a race of super-intelligent beings from another planet visited earth. Using advanced scanning technology, they are able to determine exactly how your brain works, down to the function of each individual neuron. High level of awareness: controlled processes, focused attention, high level of concentration, automatic process, some awareness, but minimal attention required, daydreaming, autopilot, unconscious, due to head injury, anesthesia, come, no awareness! It: some unconsciousness monitoring of the rest of the environment focuses the spotlight of attention, one method is called dichotic listening- two ears tactic. Sleep: sleep patterns, follow natural circadian rhythm, but we often disrupt this rhythm, how, staying up late, waking up early, taking a sleep aid, being woken up. Jet lag: are there consequences, you become grouchy. Rhythm of sleep: circadian rhythms occur on a 24 hour cycle and include sleep and wakefulness, light triggers suprachiasmatic nucleus to decrease melation from pituary gland.
