• As the Romans start conquering their gods start modernizing

5. Cult to goddess of Vesta (Goddess of Hearth)
• Romans believed the Rome was a big home and had a fire in the
center which was the heart
• If the fire went out Rome would go out
• One aspect connected to family
o In every house special shrine to Lares and Penates (pantry
gods) shows family was a big deal to romans
C. The Roman Family
1. Head was the father
• Paterfamilias
2. Daughter lived with her husbands’ family
• Married a little later than women in Greece
• Lots of divorce
o People don’t want their family line to end

o Worst job was mining – life expectancy was 6 months
• Were used in shows so punish them

o Freed slaves; could happen in wills
