Document Summary

Closing the revolving door of the prison system. After over three decades, orleans parish prison"s inmate, j. c. alford, can finally see the exit sign for, what one may call, the revolving door of the prison system. Now at the age of 52, this offender can look back on his life, one that consists of multiple incarcerations, and know that he is leaving his criminal past behind indefinitely. Alford"s transformation could not have been possible without the reformative nature of his prison"s reentry program (chang). Reentry refers to the moment when a person leaves prison and must reintegrate into society. Because many offenders have been isolated from the world for numerous years, this transition is not as smooth as one would imagine. Upon release, inmates are typically given minimal things, such as a set of clothes and a bus ticket. Also, family ties are often severed throughout the years of their incarceration, so support from others is hard to come by.
