CMST 4119 Lecture : Lecture 2
Document Summary
Observer-target: the observer bases an impression on their target given limited information on them. Once an observer forms an impression of a target, that observer will engage in behaviors to confirm that impression. Self-verification theory: our self identities are really important to us, and we will engage in activities that are consistent with our identities. We do so in the choices we make. Judy burgoon - wrote a textbook on nonverbal communication. Took a functional approach, and proposed there were 3 types of information we get from first impressions: Demographic: sex we see a body first and we make an assessment, male or female. Once you know the sex you can begin to make assumptions: age, race. Socio-cultural: refers to social categories and groups: status. Whenever we make a demographic judgment, that feeds down into the next two categories. Information: all stimuli in the environment that reduce uncertainty for an organism. Behavior: any action or reaction performed by an organism.
