Chapters 5, 7 plus deception: nonverbal communication primary means of communication (why is powerful); not just the words that are coming out of mouth. Often unconscious, primarily biological (we don"t have control over), but culturally regulated; often ambiguous, continuous, multi- channeled (becomes difficult to pick out part of nonverbal communication that"s important): 1. Continuous and natural is biologically based: 4. Leakage nonverbal communication that leaks out when we are trying to control it. 6 universal facial expressions (eckman) happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise. Self- manipulator something you are doing to your own body to calm you do (example: biting nails, twisting hair, shaking your leg, etc. : 2. Object-manipulator same thing but doing with an object (example: twisting ring, smoking, chewing straw, etc. ) 4: people can display emotions that they aren"t experiencing. Display rules: rules that tell what is appropriate to display at certain situations.
