Document Summary

Chemistry is a science that studies the properties and behavior of matter by observing the properties and behavior of atoms and molecules. Matter is any material of the universe that has mass and occupies space. Consists of subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Elements are composed of a unique kind of atom. Each element has unique characteristics and behave differently from each other. Molecules are combinations of atoms held together in specific shapes. Gas: has no body or shape, can be compressed, has dispersed molecules. Liquid: takes the shape and body of containers, can interact with itself, has closer packed molecules. Solid: has an independent shape, cannot be compressed, very tightly packed molecules. Pure substance: composition does not vary and they are either elements or compounds (consist of two or more elements) Heterogeneous compound that is made up of more than one kind of atom. Homogeneous made up of only one kind of element.
