Incomplete metamorphosis-increase in size over time, but don"t change morphology. 1 host ticks entire life cycle on 1 host transovarial transmission. 2 host ticks larva and nymph on 1st host, adult on 2nd. 3 host ticks larva on 1st host, nymph on 2nd host, adult on 3rd host. -can be life threatening w/ hymolytic crisis and severe anemia. Detects all abnormal rbc"s filtering through sinuses in organ and infected rbc"s phagocytized by resident macs. -blood transfusions- more cases of b. microti being reported transmitted. B. duncani has 11 mortality rate in 9 id"ed so far. Similar to babsia microti but more severe (42 fatality rate) Babesia duncani- similar to b. micrtoi but more severe west coast of usa. Babesia species have a cross in their microscopy. Rx: clindamycin + quinine*: divergens may require complete blood transfusion.
