Document Summary

If the end product of glycolysis, pyruvate is oxidized further, the cell could recover much more energy. Under aerobic conditions the tca cycle is used to oxidize pyruvate. The energy released in the oxidation is stored in the reduced electron carriers. The tca cycle is also called the citric acid cycle after the product of the first reaction. It is also called the krebs cycle after the discoverer hans krebs. Via decarboxylation of either an -keto or -keto acid. All reactions of the tca cycle take place in the mitochondria. Since glycolysis takes place in the cytosol, the end product pyruvate is transported into the mitochondria by a specific transport protein. Each reaction of the tca cycle will be listed by the name of the enzyme catalyzing the reaction: pyruvate dehydrogenase. The first reaction involves the oxidation of pyruvate to acetyl-coa and co2. This reaction is actually not considered part of the krebs cycle!!!!
