Document Summary

Chapter 1: an introduction to life on earth. Biology- the science of living organisms and life processes. The characteristics of life: complex, organized structure. Biological hierarchy- the complexity of life is built in levels. Life is an interaction of these different levels. Something can be produced from these interactions bigger than the sum of the parts (table salt) Some reactions are so slow that they cannot be seen: homeostasis. Homeostasis- the ability to maintain the structure and regulate the internal environment; this is the condition that prevents disease. Organisms must keep the conditions within their bodies fairly constant: ability to acquire material and energy. The purpose of food is to produce an energy source that our bodies can use. Atoms- the smallest units of all elements (but still maintain the properties) Both living and non-living things are made up of atoms. What is the smallest unit of organization: the answer is the atom.
