ANTH 1001 Lecture : Anth1001 Mutation Notes
Document Summary
Evolution: a change in allele frequencies in a population or species over time, a group phenomenon. Classification of mutations: point mutation change in a single nucleotide, a-t, g-c. Hemoglobin: beta has 141 amino acids, alpha has 141 amino acids. Mutation rates: estimated to be 1/100,000, mutation rates too low to be the single principle force in evolution of species. Chromosomal mutations: the position of the gene on a chromosome maybe unimportant in its phenotypic expression. If the position of a gene is changed, the phenotype maybe changed. Imbalance in chromosome #1 being the longest and #22 the shortest. Genotype set of genes possessed by an individual. Characteristics of phenotypes: traits show discontinuous variation, traits with only a few phenotypic expressions, single gene for inheritance of trait, traits show continuous variation, great variety of phenotypes for a trait, traits showing continuous variation are polygenetic.
