Example: cattle normally go to the feedlot at approximately 1 year of age (500-800 lb) & stay for. 1950"s cattle & lambs were fed by midwestern family farms. Northern ill. 50-100 head feedlot: today -most cattle & lambs fed by commercial or custom feedlots. 1960"s & 70"s feeding industry shifted to high plains. Available grain, dry climate, space (not in my backyard), feeder cattle source. Slaughter plants followed: truck transportation, cheaper labor & land, easier to ship carcasses & packaged product than live animals. Size: smaller 1,000 to 5,000; large 20,000 to 100,000+: employ 15 -30. Big business profit is the goal.
