Document Summary

Biogeography- the study of patterns of species composition and diversity across geographic locations. Endemic species: those that occur in a particular geographic location, and nowhere else on earth. Species physiology and interactions with other species are important factors in the resulting species diversity (alpha diversity)- measured locally at a single site. Landscape- topographic and environmental features of a region. Species composition and diversity vary within a region depending on how the landscape shapes rates of migration and extinction. Beta diversity: change in species number and composition, or turnover of species, from one community type to another. Regional scape- areas with uniform climate; species tied to it by dispersal limitations. Regional species pool- all the species contained within a region (gamma diversity) Gamma diversities- region x- 5, region y- 6. Highest beta diversity- x= 5/5--> 1; y = 6/3 --> 2. Scale is important because it explains why all species aren"t everywhere.
