Document Summary

The mind: mind is different and separate from matter = dualist approach. Materialist approach: mind" is what brains do, the action of the brain. Behaviour: the internally coordinated responses of organisms to their internal or external environment. To produce responses, 3 systems interact with the environment: The immune system: (protects the body from infection by fighting bacteria). Endocrine system: regulates the body"s internal state, controls growth and reproduction. Nervous system: controls ongoing activity by coordinating rapid and precise responses to stimuli. To interact with the environment: register the env, interpret those signals and generate a response. The only multicellular animal without a ns is sponges. All other animals have ns: a network of electrochemically active cells which are specialised to communicate with each other. The simplest form of ns is uncentralised (eg. starfish). Ns of vertebrates is more complex: cns and pns more clearly separated and ns is hierarchically organised.
