The foundations of the european union in the maastricht treaty. The fall of the berlin wall was an important event in the time of the maastricht treaty. Another important event was the progress in the field of economics and the progress in the monetary union. This was also a challenge, because the force of events coincide with the political will that had been expressed throughout the community"s life. There were a few important events 1988/1991: fall of the berlin wall. Led to the collapse of the soviet union and comecon (eu had ties with this organisation). Could have had dire consequences, but people had hope as they thought freedom would come with the fall of the wall (hope is strength of politics). Three important people who avoided dire consequences were: gorbachev, president bush, chancellor kohl, external conflicts that assailed europe (p. 2)
