Document Summary

Morality: principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behaviour. A social cognitive perspective of moral identity: predict when someone will see an act as immoral or not. The moral self plays a role in moral functioning (eg: prosocial behavior refrains anti-social behavior). Different approaches have been taken: person centered approach: emphasizing the stability of the moral self over time, situational based approach: highlighting how contextual cues may overpower the moral self. Social cognitive theory : can help explain seemingly inconsistent findings in the literature, such as research showing that moral primes lead to moral behavior in one case, but immoral behavior in another. Social cognitive model: a core principle situational cues (seeing an american flag) have the power to momentarily influence social information processing by activating or disactivating certain knowledge structures (one"s national identity) in an individual"s working self-concept. Moral identity: refer to whether the moral self-schema is central to a person"s self-definition.
