Five research domains, theoretically identified as antecedents of venture performance: personality traits and general motives, personal competencies, situationally specific motivation, competitive strategies, business environment. Three possible implications of prior results: traits do not matter, traits do not work in isolation from other factors, the wrong traits have been tested in past entrepreneurship studies. Characteristics of successful leaders: tenacity, proactivity, passion. Tenacity and proactivity-initiative are important for successful establishment and operation of new ventures. Passion is perhaps the most observed phenomenon of the entrepreneurial process . With other antecedents of venture growth controlled, the greater the tenacity, proactivity, and passion for work of a venture"s ceo, the greater the venture"s growth. Individual characteristics: knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform a specific job, significant performance relationships with general people and organization competencies and specific competencies. Organization competencies: oral presentation skills, decision-making ability, conceptualization ability. Specific competencies: technical skill industry skill, managerial skill, diagnostic use of concepts, use of power.
