Fisher drew on examples from a diverse range of consumer products, such as food, fashion and automobiles, to show why different supply chain solutions are required depending whether products are functional or innovative . The manufacturing strategy should be tailored to match the required order winning criteria; sourcing- and operation strategy, and route-to-market need to be appropriate to specific product/market conditions. Fisher identifies two main product characteristics: functional products tend to have stable and predictable demand with long lifecycles. Innovative products generally have unpredictable demand with short lifecycles.
