Being an active listener: attend class regularly, sit in the front and center of the room, be sure you can completely see and hear the speaker, make eye contact with the speaker, ask questions, participate in discussions. Note taking strategies: write on only one side of the paper, note the date and the day"s topic at the top of each page, write on every other line, use abbreviations, select your preferred writing utensil. Identify the day"s topic from the syllabus: use a different notebook or colored dividers for each class, create a format for each class, complete assigned readings prior to the lecture, review notes from the previous class session. Note taking: during the lecture: words or phrases the instructor writes out or presents on overheads or on presentation slides, terms or examples the instructor uses. *read 5 pages at a time but make sure you have plenty of time to read all of it.
