Later they were placed in prisons to keep them from the public. 1840s dick tried to improve the condition of people with disabilities. Schools for kids with disabilities were established 1855 wood and metal making. They also had recreational things such as dances. Institution moved from educational goals to just keeping the people alive. Infections spread and the school closed in 1987. Eugenics was responsible for removing the people with disabilities from society. American with disabilities act protects individuals with disabilities. Special education: a field continually evolving and changing. From historical accounts individuals with disabilities were often ostracized and treated as inferior human beings. Disabilities often fell into four quote visible categories: physical handicap, mental illness, deaf, or blind. Explanations for disability ranged from societal- survival of the fittest- to spiritual- demon- possessed.
