Wales, ulster (northern ireland), scotland, and england are separate nations culturally yet regions within the greater state of the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland. This is a long name often shortened as the uk or britain! These three regions possess major cases of nationalism where devolutionary measures (breaking down of the uk into smaller states) is slowly beginning to occur. Notice other regions of europe which are also nations in most instances are places hoping to break away from the larger state. We will discuss the basques and catalans of spain in my next lecture. We discussed the flemish and walloons of belgium, the bretons of france, and the south tyroleans in our past few lectures. Let"s begin with scotland as our first region of the uk with massive acts of nationalism occurring in the present. I am personally of scottish heritage and vacationed here in 2011 thus included many personal photographs in this power point lecture.
