Normal length of menstrual cycle: avg: 25-30 days, range is 20-40 days. Best ways to track menstrual cycle: bbt, apps that track when period begins, start of period. Why track menstrual cycle: regular/irregular periods length of period, cycle length, skipping periods, how much bleeding, knowing if pregnant or not. When to call a doctor: cycles are too long, period is abnormal, heavier/lighter than normal, pain, persistent changes in cycle. Lack of menstruation during woman"s reproductive years. It is normal when pregnant or breast feeding: no menarche by age 16. Secondary amenorrhea: 3 or more missed menstrual periods. Normal physiological situations that cause amenorrhea: changes in hormones. Ovaries estrogen production decreases, too much progesterone. Causes of primary amenorrhea: chromosomal abnormalities/malformation of reproductive tract. Turner syndrome one x chromosome, ovaries don"t fully develop. Other birth defect of reproductive system like an underdeveloped uterus: disorders of thyroid, adrenal cortex, pituitaty. Tumor in thyroid or brain: malnutrition/eating disorders, cryptomenorrhea.
