Later research revealed that brutal treatments may actually worsen mental health. Discovery that syphilis affects the mind in late stages of the std lead to the medical model in the 1800s. Medical model: the view that psychological disorders have physical cause and can be treated medically. Recent research on brain structure supports the biological model. Psychological disorders cannot be explained fully by biology. Epigenetics: how environment also affects your expression of genes. Biopsychosocial approach: recognizes that biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors all play roles in human functioning. Psychological disorder: syndrome marked by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual"s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior. Maladaptive: disorder that interferes with ability to function. This approach emphasizes that mind and body are inseparable.
