Zygote: life cycle begins in conception, 2 week period of rapid cell division and develops into an embryo. Embryo: zygote"s inner cells become the embryo, out cells become placenta, 2 weeks . Fetus: in the next 6 weeks, body organs begin, by 9 weeks, fetus is recognizably human. Teratogen: agent, chemical or virus, that can reach the embryo or fetus during prenatal development and cause harm (alcohol, smoking, virus) Fetal alcohol syndrome (fas): physical and mental abnormalities in children caused by a pregnant woman"s heavy drinking. Severe: small, out of proportion head, abnormal facial features. Child responds to sounds while still in uterus. Newborns prefer the voice of their mother to other women & their father. Within 2 hours of birth, can differentiate sour from bitter and sweet from nonsweet, preference for sweet. Have preference of looking at the faces, notice and recognize faces. 1 month: distinguish mother"s face from other face.
