Document Summary

P101 lecture 24 notes- language and thought (cont. ) Review: exemplar vs. prototype theory: prototype- we have an amalgamation (an average idea) we compare new encounters to for categorization. Faster- only have to compare new thing to one other. Less accurate: exemplar- we have individual examples (exemplars), and we compare new encounters to all of them for categorization. Slower- have to compare new thing to many others; uses serial method. More accurate- much more data to go off of; more variability accounted for: expertise- can compare new thing to all exemplars simultaneously and still be accurate. Problem solving: encounter problem; must categorize it as ill-defined or well-defined so a strategy can be chosen. Ill-defined- unclear problem in itself, unclear starting and/or ending point; hard to tell when solved. Well-defined- clear starting and ending point; easy to tell when solved: strategies. Can combine multiple strategies together- do not need to commit to one.
