PHIL-P 145 Lecture 8: Philosophy Discussion Questions P.2
Document Summary
Discussion questions (informative comments and important questions from readings) Section 2: personally i think there pleasure isn"t the only thing that of intrinsic value because their are so many things have not yet been distinguished and/or commonly know. Confidence/high-ego can be both be seen as intrinsic value because they differ from pleasure which is what some would argue but it"s a weak argument: it"s interesting how milk"s ideology differs from other philosophers around that time. Mill believed in focusing on one"s self, making one as happy as possible, Milk although selfish, did have some point in that sometimes it is best to emphasize your needs over others. If it has even the slightest chance of mistake it should be abolished: i have long thought that someone"s actions towards a being of no importance to them is a really test of character. Not how we treat our friends but how we would treat an injured dog on a late rainy night.
