PSYC 6 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Object Permanence, Egocentrism, Psych
Document Summary
Proposed that new schemes are formed during each stage. Four stages of development- reflect different ways of thinking about world. Schemes- ways of thinking based on personal experiences. Each stage builds on previous one through learning. Assimilation- a new experience is placed into existing scheme. Accommodation- new scheme created or existing one dramatically altered. Sensorimotor (b-2)- engaging senses, interacting with objects. Acquire information through senses and motor exploration. Object permanence- understanding that an object continues to exist when hidden from view. At 9 months, will search for hidden objects. Preoperation stage-represent objects, language development, drawing, basic classification. Cannot imagine logical outcomes of performing certain actions. Do not base thinking on logic, but rather on superficial appearances. Do not understand law of conservation of quantity. Centration- limitation when child can only think about one detail/aspect of problem, limiting ability to think logically. Egocentrism- engage in thought processes that revolve around their own perspectives.
