More rehearsal in short-term memory creates a strong stored memory trace in long-term memory. Iconic memory- a sensory store that holds visual information for approximately 500 ms or longer. Increases the time for which visual information is available to use. Does not depend on attention, but attention happens before it goes into the memory store. Echoic memory- a sensory store that holds auditory information for approximately 2 s in right hemisphere but 5 s in the left. Short-term memory: items are chunks are different, overestimate short-term memory capacity because performance depends on rehearsal and long-term memory. In the past, diagnosis led to ostracism, inhumane treatment, stigma, etc. Diagnosis may be an oversimplification of a complex and multi sided human behavior. If done carefully and sensitively, diagnosing can: Strength of the psychoanalytic approach is in understanding and appreciation of a personality structure with its defense mechanisms.
